Moving With Pets? 7 Tips to Consider

The moving process can be time-consuming and stressful. The process can be even more difficult if you have pets.

So, how do you move with pets? Explore some tips to help you.

1. Consider the Type of Housing

Evaluate your pet's activity, habits, and size when choosing a new house. Large pets will usually require a lot of space to move around.

The same is true for animals that like to play and run around. Therefore, your new house must be large enough to accommodate your pets.

Know the landlord's pet policy if you plan to move into a rental house. Don’t sneak the pets to a place where the rules don't allow it. The landlord could kick you out, and the animal will have difficulty moving around.

2. Maintain the Pet's Schedule

Your pet may have a schedule that includes a specific time for waking, feeding, and playtime. Stick to the pet's schedule in the weeks before the move. A consistent schedule helps to prevent panic and keep your pet calm as you pack items for the move.

3. Pack Early Enough

Your pet may become unsettled if you suddenly start to move things around the home. To prevent any panic, start to pack early in advance. That way, the pet will have enough time to adjust to the upcoming changes.

4. Make Arrangements for the Moving Day

Do you plan to relocate to a different continent or across the ocean? Will you drive or take a flight to the new place? Do you plan to move on your own or will a moving company help you?

These factors determine the type of arrangements that you have to make. Local moves typically take a short time and can be over within the same day. Therefore, the pet can stay at a nearby daycare or with your friend.

The arrangement gives you the freedom to focus on the move. If you use a vehicle to get to the new place, plan the route in advance. Identify pet-friendly hotels and restaurants where you can stop to feed your pets.

If you will use air travel, make prior arrangements. Many airlines only allow a few pets per flight, so book early enough. In addition, you will usually have to produce documents before the pet can board the plane. Ensure you have these documents and store them in an easy-to-access place.

5. Update Pet Information

Change the pet's information to reflect the new home. You can start with putting your new address on the dog's or cat's collar tags. If the pet gets lost in the new neighborhood, people will know where to bring it.

You also need to choose a new veterinarian in the new neighborhood. Your current veterinarian or new neighbors can help you find a qualified vet.

6. Keep the Pet Secluded

You may be tempted to let the pet explore the new home. However, a smarter decision is to seclude your pet for the first few days. For example, you can put the pet in the laundry room and ensure it's comfortable.

7. Provide a Lot of Treats

Treats can be helpful when you want to calm your pet down. You can use the food to reward the pet for remaining calm during the move.

The provision of treats also ensures that the pet doesn't lose weight due to the moving stress. Once the pet has settled in the new home, you can revert to usual food.
